History

In 1961, the section of PA 54 between Mausdale and Ashland was replaced by PA 45 in order simplify route numbers by connecting the two segments of that route. On May 9, 1966, PA 54 was extended to its current eastern terminus by replacing PA 45 between Mausdale and Nesquehoning; this change was made to establish a direct connection to I-80. , the original branch of PA 54/PA 61, which went from Centralia to Ashland, has been permanently closed because the road has severely opened up and buckled extensively.
